Game Optimisation for Virtual Reality on the Oculus Rift

We at Hammerhead Interactive assist game and app developers with virtual reality (VR) implementation for the Oculus Rift.

The Oculus Rift is a lightweight, £200 virtual reality headset with a wide field of view, stereoscopic 3D and low latency head tracking. Since the dev kit was released in May ~40,000 Rifts have been shipped. The consumer version of the Oculus Rift is due to be released mid 2014, and OculusVR expect to ship 500,000 units by the end of 2015.

VR has the potential to enhance gaming experiences through unprecedented immersion and unique head based gameplay. Oculus Rift support can breathe fresh air into games, reach wider markets and monetise on the launch of the consumer Oculus Rift in mid 2014. VR games receive a substantial amount of exposure, while the limited number of competitors and games available allows for a large share in a high growth market. In addition sales made to current and future Rift owners, announcing VR support provides excellent press coverage, which in turn produces sales to non-Rift owners.

Our experience researching VR design principles and developing VR games allows us to optimize existing games in a quick and inexpensive manner. To start with we will play test the game with basic Rift support, and produce a list of issues that require fixing. The most common challenges relate to Scale, Speed, Interface and Controls.

Our vision is to get developers and consumers excited about VR, so we can evolve to the next logical step in gaming.
